The burnt remains of a emaciated dog have been found in a bin in Selhurst.
The RSPCA is appealing for information after the male Staffordshire bull terrier was found wrapped in a blanket and found among a pile of rubbish yesterday morning off Northbrook Road.
It is not known whether he died before being burnt or afterwards.
RSPCA inspector Anthony Pulfer went to the scene after a member of the public raised the alarm.
He said: "It is impossible to know whether this dog was burned alive or after he had died. Either way the poor animal was in a terrible state.
"You could see his ribs and his hip bones standing out because he was so thin.
"He was burnt all along the side of his body, and there were matches scattered around him. It was a chilling sight.
"We urge anyone who has any information about how he came to be in this state to come forward and let us know. They can of course do this in complete confidence."
The Staff was tan and white coloured and thought to be around five to seven years old.
It is thought he was left around the bins between midnight and the early hours of yesterday morning.
