A man was injured by a gang of muggers who asked him for directions and then tried to steal his phone.

The incident occurred at 8.20pm last Thursday, December 19, when a man in his 20s, was walking along Chalk Lane, in Epsom, and was approached by one of the muggers asking for directions.

The man did not know the route to the destination and went to use his phone to find out.

At this point, a second mugger struck the victim with an object, knocking him down.

But he fought back and prevented the gang from stealing his mobile.

They made off with his headphones instead, leaving the victim with bruising to his face.

One of the muggers is a black man in his 20s, 5ft 2ins and of medium build.  He was wearing a green beanie hat, a dark coloured military style coat and spoke with a local accent.

Detective Constable Colin Snell said: "It is possible the offenders may have attempted to use this ruse on other people prior to committing this offence and I would appeal to anyone who was approached share this information with us."

Anyone with information should call the police on 101, quoting reference 45130007867, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
