Fallen trees are causing misery for commuters using the rail network during this afternoon's storm.

A tree has reportedly fallen near Norwood Junction station, which is causing delays, cancellations and diversions of trains.

Trains through Crystal Palace station to Victoria are now being diverted through Selhurst.

The fallen tree is also understood to be affecting London Overground trains on the West Croydon line.

Southern trains has said because of the high winds its trains have been running at reduced speeds from 4pm today which will lead to some trains being cancelled and delays to others.

Passengers are being advised to take transport earlier than they normally would if able to do so because the strom may worsen.

A statement from the rail operator said there was also a possibility of line blockages during the evening due to fallen trees which may lead to greater disruption.

First Capital Connect is currently running a revised service with trains travelling at a reduced speed to lessen the risk of trees and other debris being blown onto the railway lines.

Services will finish earlier tonight from about 8pm.

The storm may also affect trains tomorrow morning as lines are checked for fallen trees and any blockages removed.

A spokesman for southern said: "This is highly likely to lead to services being significantly disrupted or cancelled and it may take some time to clear routes, depending on the extent of damage caused by the storm.

"Passengers are asked to check before they travel and to plan for a later start of train services on Tuesday morning."

"Passengers should check their service prior to travel at nationalrail.co.uk. Please bear in mind that decisions over train services are likely to be made at relatively short notice as the situation emerges, so check as close to your planned travelling time as possible."
