A cut-off leisure centre is being protected by sandbags after a river burst its banks, with more flooding expected today as the river continues to rise.

Leatherhead Leisure Centre, off Guildford Road, closed at 9am in the face of rising floodwater from the overflowing River Mole at Leatherhead.

The Environment Agency said it expects the water level to continue rising today, flooding a number of properties in the area.

Matt Finn, marketing executive at Fusion, which runs the leisure centre, said: "From what I understand the River Mole has burst its banks, which is severely affecting the access road.

"There’s no flooding in the centre but because the access road is so flooded we felt it was not safe for staff or customers to make the journey.

"The football pitches were closed because they were covered by water. We apologise for any inconvenience due to unforeseen circumstances."

Mr Finn said that staff and customers have safely left the centre, but a few technicians remained behind to put sandbags in place.

The Environment Agency issued a flood warning for the River Mole at Leatherhead and Fetcham this morning.

It said: "Properties are expected to flood as a result of rising river levels caused by heavy rain falling in the last 24 hours.

"River levels are rising significantly throughout the day and are likely to cause significant flooding. Flooding of properties is expected early this morning and throughout the day.

"Our teams are on the ground clearing watercourses and we will continue to closely monitor situation and update this warnings as during the day."
