Hundreds of actors, actresses and backstage crew attended the sixteenth annual Pantomime Ball on Sunday.

More than 200 people from theatres across the south east put on their glad rags at the Fairfield Halls event on December 29.

The Pantomime Ball has been held in Croydon since 1997, attracting both stars and unsung heroes among the cast and crew from across the UK.

The evening included live music, dancing, cabaret and there was a fancy dress theme amongst those who work backstage.

If the ball was not enough fun, partygoers had the opportunity to dance the night away at Bad Apple in the town centre.

Fairfield Deputy Technical Manager, Rob Callender, who took over the organisation of the event in 2011, said: "Once more casts and crews from across the region has shown their enthusiasm to celebrate the pantomime season and its sense of community, by gathering for this fun event.

"We are proud that Croydon has hosted this event annually since it started a generation ago.

"Following the success of previous years' live bands, we arranged one as background music this year, along with cabaret. We are also indebted to colleagues and suppliers who assisted so generously with their time, skills and services."

I seem to recall that the Pantomime Ball was started in the 70's by the then-Director, Michael Tearle, with artistes such as Roy Castle and Michael Aspel attending. It obviously didn't continue for too long if the "new" PB was started in 1997. It would be interesting to hear whether anybody has earlier memories or photos.
