A football ground flooded for the second time yesterday as flood alerts and severe weather warnings continue.

Leatherhead Football Club’s ground in Fetcham Grove first flooded on Christmas Eve and the water level was rising rapidly this morning, with the pitch, car park and part of the clubhouse all under water.

It is not expected to be able to play at home for three weeks.

Pitstop, a homeless centre within the grounds, was also inundated again yesterday and has had to temporarily relocate to Fetcham Village Hall.

The football ground is next to the River Mole, which remains high and could burst its banks again as wind and rain is forecast to persist over the weekend.

An early notification flood alert remains in place for the whole river but the flood warning at Leatherhead has been lifted.

The flood alert said: "River levels have started to fall in Leatherhead and Cobham. There remains a risk of flooding to low lying land and roads into Friday morning.

"River catchments remain very sensitive to rainfall. The forecast is for further periods of rainfall over the next few days, which is likely to cause further reactions in river levels."

The Met office has issued warnings for people to be prepared for severe wind and rain across London and the South East of England.

The warning said: "Further heavy showers and thunderstorms with hail and squally winds will affect southern parts of England and southern and western parts of Wales during the rest of today.

"The public should be aware of the risk of disruption, particularly to travel, with the possibility of localised surface water flooding, hail temporarily covering roads and also damage from lightning strikes."

Leatherhead Leisure Centre, which closed on Christmas Eve because its access was flooded, is currently open and escaped without flood damage.

Matt Finn, marketing executive at Fusion which runs the leisure centre, said: "I was there yesterday and there was flooding on the road and at the football club. There’s no damage. We got away with it."

Firefighters have now moved back into the upstairs part of the flooded Leatherhead fire station during the day, but have to base themselves elsewhere during the night.
