The council is calling on residents to ensure their Christmas trees stay green even after turning brown - by using one of the borough's free recycling banks.

Croydon's 23 temporary recycling points will be open until Saturday January 11, six days after superstition dictates that you should take down your decorations.

From January 12 trees can be disposed of at the borough's three permanent recycling centres.
Decorations, pots and stands should be removed before trees are recycled.

Councillor Phil Thomas, cabinet member for environment and highways, said: "The borough’s recycling figures continue to improve thanks to the help of local residents.

"The Christmas and New Year period generates a lot of extra waste, so it’s an important time of year to reinforce the recycling message.

"That’s why we’ve made things as easy as possible for residents to recycle as much as they can, and to carry on their great work into 2014 and beyond."
