Proud parents saw in the New Year welcoming their own special deliveries at Croydon University Hospital, with six boys and four girls arriving for the start of 2014.

The first baby arrived at 1.32am with the last at 5.35pm on 1 January 2014.

Little Nathaniel Mills, 6 lbs 12 oz, was one of the first babies of 2014 after being born into the world at 1.48pm.

Mother Monique Flynn, 21-years-old business student at Croydon College, was taken by surprise as she expected to pass her original due date of 2 January.

Accompanied by her mother, her aunt, two friends and the helpful staff of the maternity ward, she was provided with plenty of support despite the unfortunate absence of father Gary Mills, who had to be working as an electrician at the time in New York.

Miss Flynn said: “I’m really happy for Nathaniel to be born on New Year’s Day as I consider this a blessing.”

Lena Laurice Karam, Clinical Midwifery Manager for Croydon Health Services NHS Trust, said: “It’s always nice to see the new arrivals in a new year, although it’s exciting whenever babies are born.

“The unit was busy early on and we were glad to see the birth of a number of happy, healthy little boys and girls for the beginning of 2014.”
