Businesses have been urged to make sure they look after their staff after more than 50 workers were seriously injured last year.

Newly released figures show 59 people in Croydon were seriously injured in workplace incidents in the year from April 2012 to March 2013.

Although that is 20 fewer than the previous year, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has called on businesses to make workers' safety their top priority and cut then number further this year.

Richard Boland, HSE head of operations for London, said: "This serves as a stark reminder of why we need good health and safety in workplaces.

"I therefore urge employers to spend their time tackling the real dangers that workers face, and to stop worrying about trivial matters or pointless paperwork.

"It’s important to remember that while we still have one of the lowest rates of workplace deaths in Europe, one death is still one too many.

"I would urge businesses to focus on helping to cut the number of deaths in 2014."

Across London 13 people died at work in 2012/13 and 2,141 suffered a major injury. The highest number of serious injuries at work - 236 - was recorded in Westminster. In Sutton 34 people were injured.
