Protesters are being rallied ahead of a planning appeal hearing against the refusal of a waste incinerator in Cobham.

Plans for a waste incinerator on greenbelt land in Redhill Road were unanimously refused by Surrey County Council on February 6, 2013, but applicant SAS Waste ltd has lodged an appeal with the Planning Inspectorate.

The No Elmbridge Waste Incinerator Group (NEWIG) wants those who oppose the plans to attend a public meeting ahead of the planning appeal.

Lulu Appleton, member of NEWIG, said: “More than 2,000 people in our community said no to the original planning application. In fact, we cannot find anyone who wants one to be built there.

“This is not just about local people objecting. Redhill Road attracts a huge catchment area, as people come from miles around to play golf or ride at the equestrian centre. The road has a cycle lane and the bluebell woods attract countless walkers and nature lovers.

“These are just a few of the many reasons why this leafy country lane is unsuitable.”

The meeting will take place on Tuesday, January 14 at Silvermere Golf Club, Redhill Road at 6.30pm.
