Two teenagers were stabbed in the Whitgift Centre last night.

Police were called to the shopping centre at 6.09pm yesterday to reports of a stabbing.

London Ambulance Service treated two boys aged 16 and 17, who were taken to hospital with stab wounds. A spokeswoman said the 17-year-old's injuries were serious.

They are both described as currently being in a stable condition.

A witness said one of the boys had a flesh wound to his left arm and a slash to his right cheek.

The witness said the other boy was stabbed in his back.

It is understood the stabbings took place outside a shop on the second floor and that one boy collapsed outside a jewellers.

Detectives from Croydon police are investigating. No arrests have yet been made.

The shopping centre closed following the stabbings last night but reopened as usual this morning.

A spokesman for the Whiftgift Centre said: "The shopping centre's pre-planned incident response procedure was activated and members of Whitgift Shopping Centre’s security team were in attendance.

"Part of the Centre was closed with emergency services notified, and the police took control of the incident thereafter. The centre fully opened as normal this morning.

"As this is now a police matter, the Whitgift Shopping Centre cannot comment further."
