A masterplan has been unveiled to regenerate one of the most historical parts of the borough.

The draft Old Town Masterplan goes before the council’s cabinet on Monday and if approved is set to go for a final round of public consultation..

Croydon’s Old Town has three conservation areas and two grade one listed buildings.

This includes the Croydon Minster and part of the Old Palace School which is a former medieval palace and residence of the Archbishops of Canterbury.

It is also the site of some of the earliest Saxon settlements near the banks of the River Wandle.

Surrey Street Market, which dates back to the 13th century, is also based in Old Town as is the Pumping station, a grade two listed building.

Old Town was badly hit during the Croydon riots in 2011 and it is hoped the masterplan can help breathe new life into the area as well as keep up with the pace of redevelopment in the town centre.

There are five main objective of the plan, which was formulated with the help of residents, businesses and community groups.

The council want to provide new homes in Old Town, improving streets and making green spaces such as Wandle Park more accessible to visitors, encourage more businesses to the area, finding new uses for vacant historical buildings such as the pumping station and improving routes in and out of Old Town.

The latter includes better pedestrian and cycle routes, removing one way systems and making Roman Way more accessible for cars and to pedestrians.

Councillor Jason Perry, cabinet member for planning, transport and regeneration, said the masterplan will provide a framework for potential planning applications for the area.

He said encouraging developers to the area will help fund aspects of the masterplan.

Coun Perry added: "We want the regeneration of the town centre to breathe new life into Old Town and ensure it continues to develop as a thriving historic quarter bustling with activity.

"We hope people will get involved in the consultation process for the draft Old Town Masterplan and help us shape this vision."

Gavin Barwell, MP for Croydon Central said: "Old Town is the historic heart of the town.  It’s great to see the Council looking to see how the area around beautiful buildings like the Minster and the Pumping Station can be enhanced.

"And how the connectivity between Old Town and other parts of the town centre can be improved so that Surrey Street Market and Church Street benefit from the Westfield/Hammerson proposals."

Details of consultation events and information will be published on the Croydon Council website.
