"Worse than cancer" is the verdict of a man who has had all his worldly possessions stolen, including baby photos, letters and clothes.

Charles Power, 57, who comes from Leicester and was made redundant from his job with a frozen drinks company last year, packed up all his belongings in a big blue trailer and drove down last month to stay with his sister-in-law in Epsom.

Your Local Guardian:

He hoped to head off with it this year to start a new life in France.

But he said that when he went to the trailer last Wednesday, January 15, he was stunned to find it missing from the parking space he was renting in Woodlands Road, Epsom.

Mr Power said: "I went to collect it and it was gone. I was stunned. I have got nothing left. Now I don’t know what to do. It is all up in the air.

"I just keep remembering what was in there and keep getting more and more upset.

"There were all my clothes, personal papers, photos of my children from when they were born."

The trailer contained everything from bikes to the birth certificates and a fridge-freezer, baked potato oven and tools which he had brought to use in a catering business.

Mr Power, who is staying with his sister-in-law in Woodlands Road, said he had a ferry ticket booked to leave for France on Sunday, January 19.

He said: "I got made redundant last year and thought I would take a jump. I just thought I would start afresh but now I don’t know what to do."

He has reported the crime to the police and appealed for anyone who has spotted the trailer to get in touch.

He said: "My personal view is they are worse than cancer, the people who have done it. At least you can get over cancer sometimes. This you can never get over. Whatever is gone I can never replace."
