More pupils in Croydon than ever before are achieving at least five GCSEs at top grades as the borough's youngsters notched up a tenth successive year of improvement.

Just over a third of pupils - 64.4 per cent - passed five or more of the exams at A*-C grade including English and Maths last year.

The figure rose from 62.2 per cent in 2012, meaning the borough's average grades have improved every year for a decade.

Croydon again outstripped the national average pass rate, which fell from 59.4 per cent to 59.2 per cent.

Independent schools topped Croydon's league table, published today, with Al-Khair School and Trinity School both achieving 100 per cent pass rates for the second year running.

Quest Academy in South Croydon saw the biggest improvement, with their pass rate increasing by 16 percentage points, while Woodcote High School in Coulsdon saw its rate jump up 13 percentage points.

The Archbishop Lanfranc School had the worst pass rate, with 39 per cent of pupils passing five exams at top grades.
