Works to remove a crane on top of an 18 storey building in Croydon which snapped when it was struck by lightning over the weekend is taking longer than initially expected.
Engineers had hoped to have completed the job at the IYLO building in Wellesley Road yesterday but the damaged crane is still being ‘derigged’.
It is hoped it will be removed by mid to late afternoon.
Once the crane has been removed the crane which was put up so engineers could take down the snapped one will have to be removed from the site.
Road closures will remain in place in the area until the work is complete.
A Croydon Council spokesman said: “There is risk that there might still be road closures tomorrow morning and people need to look out for updates before they leave home.”
As well as the northern end of Wellesley Road, closures are in place between Station Road and St James Road both ways and on St James Road from Tavistock Road to the junction with Whitehorse Road.
