I've been struggling with the bin collection introduced for my area - for a couple of years this has taken place on Saturday mornings, so bins should be set out for collection on Friday evenings.

The resulting effect is that either I don't go away for the weekend as usual (curtailing my time for leisure opportunities, going away for work purposes or committing to voluntary time); or I have to contact my neighbours in the hope that one of hasn't got any plans and doesn't mind taking my bins in (again).

Or I can leave the bins until the next collection I'm not going away, or visit the recycling facility on Kempton Road Estate (what do I pay my Council Tax for?)

The Government says that local authority recycling targets should be 50 per cent by 2020 but I'm concerned why this should be so low - for about 10 years various official sources have stated that at least 75 per cent of our refuse is recyclable.

As 75 per cent of our waste is recyclable, why does Sutton Council only manage 45 per cent?

Also I have two bins - one for recyclables and one for rubbish destined for landfill - but the first gets collected fortnightly yet the landfill waste gets picked up every week?

So every fortnight I want to have my recycling bin emptied, yet my waste bin needs to go out less than monthly (usually 2-3 months).

In Oxford we do alternate weeks for recycling and landfill, and this works brilliantly (though again I still only put my landfill out every couple of months!)
