A school has been forced to close as flooding causes chaos in Kenley.

Harris Primary Academy Kenley closed today because of the flooding in the area.

A battle is on at the Kenley water treatment works to stop it from having to be shut down following the severe flooding in the area.

Firefighters are working around the clock at the plant in Godstone Road after setting up a high volume pump there at 9pm last night.

The A22 Godstone Road is still closed both ways between Kenley and Whyteleafe due to the flooding between the B2208 Croydon Road / Burntwood Lane / Woldingham Road / Succomb's Hill (Wapses Lodge Roundabout) and B270 / Whyteleafe Hill.

A statement from Croydon council said: "The intense rainfall received over the past couple of months, 220mm of rain in January, has saturated the ground causing the flow of the Bourne and the water table to increase significantly.

"The water table is usually 25 metres below ground during the summer months and is the boundary between water-saturated ground and unsaturated ground. It is now approximately 0.75 metres below ground.

"An area's water table can fluctuate as water seeps downward from the surface and as a result surface water flooding is being experienced along the low lying parts of the valley. In particular the Bourne Park Close recreation ground and adjoining open space heading toward the Kenley treatment works up to Bourne View."
