A South Croydon pub is to have its live music licence reviewed after complaints about noise from neighbours.

The Edge, in South End, could have its licence revoked or altered by a Croydon Council committee at a meeting on Thursday.

It follows claims that the pub, which stages live music three times a week and DJs on Friday nights, was "damaging the quality of life of local residents".

The review was trigged by an application from a neighbour, who lives in nearby Thanet House in Coombe Road.

The applicant said: "The volume of music emanating from the pub is excessive for a residential area.

"I have made a number of complaints about the noise but little has been done to address noise levels."

They added: "It is not appropriate for a pub surrounded by residential properties to be playing loud music late at night.

"There is no set night for music to be played late a night, but even if this was the case it would be damaging the quality of life of local residents, who already have noise from heavy traffic and living at a busy crossroads."

The applicant also complained about noise from customers leaving the pub and smoking outside.

The council's noise pollutions team logged five complaints from three neighbours of the pub between August and December last year.

On two of those occasions officers found noise levels high enough to warrant action.

Hayley Ring, manager of the Edge, said she had invited the applicant to meet to discuss his concerns.

She said the venue had only been made aware of one complaint, concerning music being played outside, and had responded by moving speakers indoors.

She added: "I do not wish to cause inconvenience to local residents. I personally ensure that music finishes when it should."

Ms Ring said music always finished no later than midnight, in accordance with the venue's licence, and was noise levels were monitored.

John Nicholson, a regular customer at the venue, said: "The residents' complaints are out of all proportion.

"As a professional photographer I attend lots of local music pubs and venues but the Edge has become my regular haunt due to the sheer quality of it’s jam nights and the musicians it attracts."

He added: "Frankly, if the resident wants a totally quiet life then moving into an area of Croydon famous for its pubs, restaurants and nightlife seems to have been a rather odd decision on their part."

A council sub-licensing committee will consider the application on Thursday night.
