Croydon South MP Sir Richard Ottaway has asked the Government if businesses affected indirectly by flooding will benefit from extra financial help.
Sir Richard believes businesses along the A22 that have not been flooded, but whose trade has been affected by the closure of Godstone Road, should be entitled to 100 per cent business rate relief for three months.
In the House of Commons earlier today, he asked the Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin for clarification on who was entitled to get the money which has been pledged by the Government.
Sir Richard, who is now awaiting an answer, said: “The Prime Minister has made it clear that when it comes to this relief effort, money is no object – and I applaud him for that.
“Parts of my constituency have been devastated by the flooding, and Croydon Council is working around the clock to protect homes, businesses, public services and, critically, our water treatment plant in Kenley.
“They are absolutely the priority.
“But we shouldn’t forget the hidden victims of the floods – the businesses and individuals who are suffering indirectly from the transport chaos caused by the floods.
“We must do everything we can to support them too.”
