Hundreds of Croydon teachers went on strike this morning over pay, pensions and "intolerable" workloads.

Most of borough's schools have been affected by the one-day the walkout, called by the National Union for Teachers (NUT).

Some 17 primary schools have confirmed they will shut completely, with a further 46 partially closed.

No secondary schools have been forced to close.

The NUT called the strike in protest at the Government's planned implementation of performance-related pay, the increase in state pension age to 68 and long working hours.

Many of Croydon's striking teachers plan to attend a rally at Westminister this afternoon.

General secretary Christine Blower said strike action was a last resort for teachers.

She said: "We deeply regret the fact that we have been put in this position. Teacher morale is at an all-time low.

"Teachers regularly work in excess of 60 hours a week which is unacceptably high and unsustainable.

"The introduction of performance-related pay is a way of paying teachers less, not more."

The Government's Workload Diary survey found last year that all teachers had seen an increase in working hours since 2010, with the NUT stressing working days go far beyond lesson time.

Primary school teachers now work nearly 60 hours a week on average, while secondary teachers have seen a six-hour increase in their weekly working hours to 56.
