Campaigners dressed in green staged a colourful protest to highlight pedestrian crossing problems in Thornton Heath.

Croydon Citizens leaders joined with elderly and disabled people at the crossing between Tesco and Superdrug in Brigstock Road to show it is difficult for them to cross before the green man turns red.

And the leaders held banners saying Give Us Time to Cross and Stay Green for Longer to send a message to Transport for London (TfL) about the crossing.

A spokeswoman for the community group, Frances Gilbert, said: "I feel quite nervous every time I use this crossing as the green man goes out as you reach half way over the road.

“I am deeply concerned about those who are disabled, elderly and or have young children.

“We need more time to get across safely and I hope TfL meets with us to sort this out immediately."

Iain Blackmore, Head of Traffic Infrastructure at TfL, said: “As part of our continued commitment to road safety for all users, we are constantly monitoring the road network.

"Working with the local council, we will look to see whether any further improvements could be made to this location.”
