A group of Crystal Palace fans have raised more than £22,000 for charity after walking to Stamford Bridge to Selhurst Park in December.

Mark Smith, who is a diehard Palace fan and the club’s academy partner, organised the walk in memory of Dominic King a former school friend who died from Leukaemia.

Mr Smith, along with the club’s corporate manager Chris Powlson and dozens of other fans took to the streets of south London as they walked to Stamford Bridge before the club’s game against Chelsea.

More than £22,000 was raised for the Royal Marsden and Dominic King’s family along with Amanda Heaton from the Royal Marsden were guests of the club for their win against Aston Villa.

Mr Smith said: “If ever the line “It isn’t what you do, it’s why you do it” applies to a fund raising event, it’s this one.

“Our walk from Selhurst Park to Stamford Bridge last December, was never going to win praise as a feat of human endurance, but even so, our group managed to raise over £22,000 for the Royal Marsden.

“The family of Dominic were moved that after so many years, we were able to raise funds in their son’s memory for a very worthwhile cause.

“Unfortunately, so many people are directly or indirectly affected by cancer and know very well about the fantastic work that the Royal Marsden Hospital does in Sutton and London, on a daily basis.”

He added: “I would to give huge thanks to our intrepid group of walkers who completed the walk with humour and enthusiasm, especially the kids who never once complained, and of course all of the very generous people that supported the event.”
