A man was stabbed at a Tim Westwood club night in the town centre over the Easter weekend prompting calls from the police to suspend its licence.
The stabbing took place in the early hours of Easter Monday on April 21 at the 12-20 nightclub, well known previously as Shoosh, at about 2.30am.
Renowned hip hop DJ Tim Westwood was playing a three hour exclusive set at the club that night.
A 26-year-old man was found with stab wounds by police officers and was taken to hospital. His injuries were not life-threatening.
Three other men in their 20s were also assaulted during the incident. Police do not believe the incident is gang related at this time.
In a submission to Croydon Council’s licensing committee, where the police have asked to suspend the club’s licence, they said there was mass disorder inside the premises which then continued out into the street.
Several people have been arrested in connection with the incident and an investigation is still ongoing.
Officers also said in the report they noticed two CCTV cameras were broken and one of them was pixilated.
It also says those involved the incident did not have their ID scanned when entering. Police had apparently also warned the management of the venue that they considered the Tim Westwood set a medium risk event.
PC Darren Rhodes, licensing officer, said in the report: “This venue is the site of disorder most weekends and requires a lot of police resources.
“The owner has failed to demonstrate compliance with PL conditions on all but a few.”
The report also states: “The Metropolitan Police have no confidence in the management of the premises.
“Having considered all options available to me I am of the opinion that this matter is so serious that a standard review procedure would be inappropriate and would not address the risk of further serious crime and disorder were the premises to reopen.”
Jetro Lopes, 20, of Lancing Road, Croydon, has been charged with attempted grievous bodily harm with intent, violent disorder and possession of an offensive weapon in relation to the stabbing.
He has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Croydon Magistrates' Court on May 18.
The club’s licence will be reviewed tomorrow morning at a licensing sub-committee meeting.
