The headteacher of a Kenley primary school who was suspended over allegations of misconduct has left his position.

Phil Mercer has departed from the Hayes Primary School in Hayes Lane "by mutual agreement" four months after it launched an investigation into his conduct.

He has not worked at the school since January 5.

The school wrote to parents today to inform them of his departure. No reason has been given but the school said in January no child had been harmed.

The letter reads: "On behalf of the Board of Governors, I’d like to announce that by mutual agreement Mr Mercer, Head Teacher of the Hayes Primary School, has left the School with immediate effect.

"The Board of Governors have started the process to recruit a new Head Teacher from the Autumn term, and until that time Mrs Olley will continue in her role as Acting Head Teacher.

"The Governors would like to thank Mrs Olley for covering this role with such professionalism and energy since January 2014.

"We would like to assure you that during this time of transition the high quality of education received by your children and the continuity of school business will not be impacted."

Mr Mercer took over as headteacher in summer last year after his predecessor David Wilcox retired following a 28-year stint at the school.

Ofsted inspectors judged the school judged the school to be "good" in December, following their first visit since the change of headteacher.
