With the World Cup just days away Croydon Guardian has come up with a list of our favourite pubs to watch the matches in. (Yes, it’s a hard job but someone’s got to do it.)

1. Westow House, 79 Westow Hill, Crystal Palace

Croydon Guardian: Westow House is our number one choice for watching the World Cup

Ideal for people who want to have a chat while watching the matches, this pub is keeping its usual policy of having no sound on for games.

But there is an exception to every rule and sound will be on for England games.

There is a screen in the front bar, one in the restaurant and on nice days there will be a screen in the garden.

2. The Spread Eagle, 39-41 Katharine Street, Croydon

Croydon Guardian: The Spreadeagle pub

Watching football while eating a pie is a common winter occurrence and this tradition can continue throughout the World Cup at this pub.

It is known for its pies including steak and ale and chicken and chorizo, and will be showing the matches on large screens.

3. The Windmill, 224 St James’s Road, Croydon

Croydon Guardian:

Going for a curry after drinking is a popular British pastime.

So why not combine the two in this pub while hiding your eyes from the inevitable penalty shootout?

Reasonably priced Indian food is on the menu and there are several screens large screens.

4. The Lion Inn, 182 Pawsons Road, Selhurst

Croydon Guardian:

Just five minutes walk away from Selhurst Park is this pub which hopes to have some of the Eagles atmosphere inside for the next few weeks.

A second large screen has been installed in the front bar, taking the total in the establishment up to five – both small and big.

And if you are bored during half time there is a pool table and darts.

5. The Shirley Inn, 158 Wickham Road, Shirley

Croydon Guardian:

Drinkers here are promised they will never miss any of the Brazilian action as the pub has multiple screens.

This means you can cheer your team on from all angles or console yourself over a pint of reasonably priced booze.
