Thousands of party-goers vandalised a postal delivery office during an illegal rave in Croydon last night, which has seen part of the town shut down today.

Police put an end to the party this morning, June 15, next to East Croydon Station, but violence erupted last night when revellers threw furniture and fire extinguishers at cops.

A police car window was also smashed in the chaos.

Police noticed large numbers of people and large groups at the venue last night and called for backup.

The all-night rave, held in the disused delivery office in Cherry Orchard Road, carried on until the early hours and police shut down the party at about 8.30am and cordoned off the area.

Trams are currently not running through East Croydon.

Nine people have been arrested, but police said there is likely to be further arrests.

Croydon Central MP Gavin Barwell said those responsible should "feel the full force of the law".

He wrote on his blog that police found about 200 people inside, and a further 300 outside, when first called to the building at 9.40pm.

Two people were arrested for violent disorder and have been taken to a south London police station where they remain in custody.

Six people believed to be at the rave were taken to hospital.

Three people were ill, two were suffering from head injuries and the other had an injured hand.
