Croydon schools are to be given almost half a million pounds in extra funding to help them support children from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has introduced the pupil premium as studies show children from less well-off families often fall behind before they reach school age.
Croydon is being given £494,343 so schools can provide intensive support, extra tutoring or other activities to help them catch up with their peers.
Mr Clegg said: "In a modern, fair society I want every child to have the best opportunity to get on in life, regardless of their background.
"That’s why I introduced the pupil premium - extra money for schools to support each student from a disadvantaged background to make sure that they catch up with others in their class."
