A teenage drug dealer has been sentenced to two years in detention for stabbing a customer in broad daylight in Epsom High Street.

Deighton Wilson, 17, from Thornton Heath, was handed down the detention and training order at Guildford Crown Court on Tuesday. Normally youth offenders spend half the period in custody.

Last month the jury returned a unanimous verdict of guilty of wounding, a lesser charge to the one he had been accused of, which was wounding with intent.

Wilson stabbed Carlos Ferreira in the ribs, thigh and leg during the afternoon of November 27 last year.

During the trial Wilson claimed that he only stabbed Mr Ferreira in self-defence after he and his friend Dean Price stole cannabis from him during a drug deal gone wrong.

Before the trial started, Wilson - who was 16 at the time of the stabbing - had already pleaded guilty to possessing a knife and five bags of cannabis, worth £50, with the intent to supply.

The court heard that the trio met in Rosebery Park in Epsom before travelling to the high street where a fight broke out outside Santander Bank that afternoon.

Mr Ferreira, a Portuguese man who has lived in the UK for nine years, said that by the time they reached the high street Wilson "ran to start a fight with my friend".

He said: "I tried to stop it and I pushed Wilson. Then he came in front of me and stabbed me. I felt something on my ribs. I felt something was wrong."

The victim ran off across the road, towards Derby Square, followed by Wilson.

Mr Ferreira added: "If I had stayed there he would have stabbed me even more because he came after me for about five seconds."

Prosecutor Richard Elliott told the court: "When you run a small business you can get insurance for fire damage and theft and if something goes wrong you can call the police.

"Drug dealers need their own insurance policy. This man has his own insurance policy which is carrying a knife."

Mr Ferreira was released from prison last October after serving six months for a string of burglaries in 2012 in Epsom - from the Ladbrokes betting shop, William Hill bookmakers, Pizza Express, Mountain Warehouse, Spreadeagle Walk and Forfront Net.
