Our youngsters proved to be among the sportiest in the country, ranking third in the medals table at the Surrey Youth Games.

Team Elmbridge entered 27 teams across 15 different sports at the games, which took place at Surrey Sports Park, Guildford, on Saturday, June 21, and Sunday, June 22.

Across the competitive weekend, Team Elmbridge won gold in girls hockey and table tennis, silver in junior boccia, contact boxing and senior girls judo.

The victorious team also picked up bronze medals in girls' U11 football and non-contact boxing, taking their total points to 84.

Reigate and Banstead took top spot with 91 points, while Woking came in second play with 89 points.

Councillor Mary Sheldon, portfolio holder for leisure and culture, said: "I was thrilled to be able to watch most of the competition on Saturday and met many of the youngsters who were involved.

"I was very impressed by their determination and talent. Thank you to them all for taking part and congratulations to all our medal winners."

The aim of the games is to encourage young people to try new sports and help clubs in the county to develop their junior sections.
