If you have something to get off your chest but cannot be bothered to travel to Hyde Park then you are in luck as Croydon now has its own speakers’ corner.

Inspired by the area in the north-east corner of the central London park where people can turn up and talk about any issue they choose, the Speakers’ Corner Trust has created one in the town centre in order to promote freedom of speech, public debate and active citizenship.

Speakers at the launch on Saturday included the deputy mayor Patricia Hay-Justice.

Great to have something official. Does this mean they will now move on the obnoxious religious nutters who shout at you while you walk past?

I'm guessing no.

You have the legal freedom to express your opinion in any public space, including using a megaphone.
This is a small attempt at curtailing that freedom.
