Olympic champion Sir Bradley Wiggins is returning to the roads of London, as he was announced as a late addition to the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic earlier today [Thursday].

The 2012 Tour de France winner and multiple Olympic gold medallist completes the Team Sky line-up, after initial headliner Mark Cavendish withdrew due to injury.

Wiggins will be the first former winner of Le Tour to compete in the race as the Olympic legacy event continues to grow year on year.

It is unclear whether he will lead the six-man team, which also includes fellow Britons Ben Swift, Luke Rowe and Ian Stannard.

The race will mark Wiggins’ first return to the roads where he won Olympic time trial gold at the London Olympics, since winning the overall Tour of Britain on his previous visit to the city’s streets last September.

Since then, the four-time Olympic gold medallist has been in action on the track for Team England at the Commonwealth Games, winning silver in the Team Pursuit.

“We are delighted to welcome Sir Bradley to Prudential RideLondon this weekend,” said Race Director Mick Bennett. “He completes a first-class line-up for the event.

“The race enjoys great support from spectators at the roadside across the route, and fans can now look forward to seeing one of Britain’s greatest ever cyclists racing in the event.”

Sky's team will line up against the likes of 2012 world champion Philippe Gilbert for the 200km race, as well as leading sprinters Mark Renshaw, Alessandro Petacchi and Elia Viviani.

Tens of thousands of fans are expected to line the route, which begins at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and winds through Kingston, Richmond, Wimbledon, and Putney on its way back to the finish in the Mall.

The Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic will be shown live on BBC1 from 14:00 and on British Eurosport from 14:30 on Sunday 10 August.
