Two people were injured after a lorry smashed into a tram in New Addington. 

The crash happended soon after midday today at the junction between King Henry's Drive and Lodge Lane, forcing the closure of part of the tram network. 

A woman in her twenties, a passenger on the tram, was taken to hospital after sustaining neck injuries. 

A man was also treated at the scene by paramedics.

Trams service halted between Addington Village and Addington and Lodge Lane for two hours and Lodge Lane was partially blocked to road traffic. 

Ian Smith, who lives near to the scene in Castle Hill Avenue, said the collision had caused "chaos". 

He said: "I heard a loud bang and then saw it. A young woman has been taken to hospital.

"There are police on the scene, Tranport for London people and it has shut off all the road.

"It is chaos."

A spokesman for London Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 12.23 this afternoon to reports of a road traffic collision between a car and a tram at Lodge Lane.

"We sent a single responder by car and two ambulance crews to the scene.

"We treated a woman, reported to be in her twenties, for neck pain and she was taken to Croydon University Hospital.

"A second patient, a man, was checked over at the scene but he was not taken to hospital."
