It’s always difficult to decide how to spend your precious August bank holiday weekend, writes Ella Griffiths.

But look no further, as the Ship pub brings you its first indoor market, with stalls including hand-made jewellery, crafts and artwork.

The event has already has a growing guestlist, thanks to the Facebook event that has been set up.

The market will have an emphasis on fair trade and ethically-sourced products, such as organic vegan cosmetics, vegan shoes and recycled items, as well as offering vegetarian and vegan food throughout the day.

Siobhan Terry, organiser, says: “I first had the idea of organising a veggie fair at the Ship, as there are not many places that offer a good selection of vegetarian or vegan food in Croydon.

“While living above the Ship I’ve also met so many people who make their own produce – these are the people I really wanted to include at the market, to provide an opportunity to showcase their work.”

Emma Duggan, whose business Sakura Designs will be selling at the event, says: “I think events like this are key to allow local craftspeople a platform and opportunity to show their products affordably, talk with customers and generally network.

“These events often bring collaborations and cross fertilisation that can only be started when chatting face to face rather than over a keyboard.”

Many of the small businesses and individual traders involved in the market are donating money to the Born Free Foundation – the pub’s chosen charity – instead of paying for their tables.

They are also each donating a raffle prize, with the proceeds going to the same charity.

Terry says: “I have followed the story and trial surrounding a young captive Orca called Morgan and so have chosen the Born Free Foundation as our charity, as they have campaigned for her release and raised awareness.”

This is a free event with all ages welcome.
