Budding genealogists can now trace their family tree using information from Sutton school records dating from 1870 to 1914.

The National School Admission Registers are now available through the ancestry website Findmypast.co.uk, which includes details from the 1906 to 1914 Sutton New Town Boys school register.

The records include the names and addresses of pupils, admission and leaving dates, and the name of the pupil’s parent or guardian.

It also includes the type of school the pupil went to.

Some of the names feature on the Sutton War Memorial, showing they fell during the First World War.

The records also include diaries which logged daily occurrences at the school, and records of absences, illnesses, and school visitors.

Kath Shawcross, the Borough Archivist and Local Studies Manager, said: "This is a wonderful resource for family historians, especially this year for those researching the First World War.

"The records themselves are in a fragile condition so the opportunity to digitise them has saved the records from too much handling in future."

The records can be searched for free in Sutton libraries, and offer a glimpse into life during the Victorian and Edwardian eras.
