A pensioner who defecated in public, urinated on shop windows and swore at police officers has been given an Asbo, banning him from part of Caterham for five years.

The conditions of the antisocial behaviour order are meant to stop James Johnson from exposing his genitals or urinating in public.

He is also only allowed to call 999 if it is a genuine emergency and cannot use abusive or threatening language.

And as part of the order imposed at Redhill Magistrates’ Court on Monday an exclusion zone has been enforced.

The zone covers Station Avenue from the junctions with Harestone Hill Road and Stafford Road, to the roundabout with Church Walk and Croydon Road, and from Station Avenue to Highfield Drive until its junction with Croydon Road.

Your Local Guardian:

His Asbo is in force until November 2, 2019, and breaching any of the conditions is an offence.

The 74-year-old was also fined £50 and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £20 after failing to appear at Redhill Magistrates Court on September 1.

Tandridge safer neighbourhood team Inspector Angie Austin said: "The type of appalling behaviour displayed by James Johnson is something we will never tolerate as it has no place in our society.

"Throughout the last few months we worked hard with other agencies to put in place assistance for him.

"It became apparent that the support being offered was either being abused or not being taken up.

"It is particularly gratifying to hear that the magistrates commended PC Wayne Stephens, the local officer, for going above and beyond what was required in order to secure help for Mr Johnson."

Anyone who sees James Johnson breaching any of the conditions should call the police on 101 or report it online at www.surrey.police.uk
