Shodokan Southern Karate Squad took eight fighters to the TKF Gojukai UK Nationals in Ilford last weekend, and returned with four gold medals.

Competing against teams from England, Sardinia, Hungary, Italy, Bulgaria and Japan, the Croydon-based squad won five medals in total.

Harry Riddler, 11, and Tyler Good, eight, were competing for the first time and did the club proud with their poise and technique. Pheobe Kift, 11, claimed silver in kumite in her maiden tournament being defeated by the reigning champion.

Rebecca Collins, 12, showed class and maturity to win gold in the 13-14-year-old division continuing her winning streak throughout 2014.

Asuka Peace, 16, made her way through the junior black belt opens, defeating members from Italy to claim gold in kumite.

Aaron Crindle, 17, Thomas Peek and Dylan Port,17, all competed in the junior black belt division.

Aaron Crindle, a new member to the squad, made his mark by scoring ippon and winning his first round before being narrowly beaten in the second round.

Thomas Peek, 17, gave a great display in his first round winning comfortably before meeting team mate Dylan Port in the second round.

Port eventually progressed to the final where he fought a hard battle with the reigning champion, and went on to claim gold in his maiden external tournament.

Cat Burnett, 19, gave an excellent display of kata in the black belt female open with a closely fought battle with the eventual winner from Hungary.

Sam DeSouza, came back from injury to compete in the open weight black belt to face a fellow UK competitor for third place, where he was narrowly defeated.

Noufi Theodoulou, 20, was the star of the day impressing all with his excellent display of kata - being narrowly defeated by a top Japanese competitor.

He went onto the male black belt opens kumite and reached the final, where again he met the top Japanese competitor.

With all eyes on the bout Theodoulou and the Japanese competitor, they put on an excellent display of kumite and with clean, precise and technically perfect points.

Theodoulou ended the bout 8-1 to claim the TKF National title.
