Armed police stopped a bus in South Croydon after reports a passenger was holding a gun.
But officers called to South End at 11.45am today searched the man, travelling on the route 60 to Old Coulsdon, and found nothing.
It is thought the panicked passenger who called the police may have in fact seen a cigarette lighter.
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "We were called at 11.45am today to reports of a passenger on a route 250 bus in Croydon holding a firearm.
"Armed officers stopped the bus in central Croydon and searched the man but he was not in possession of a firearm."
