A burglar ripped a key safe from the wall and stole a handbag containing family photos on Saturday evening.

A man has been arrested in connection with the burglary at the home of a vulnerable woman in her 40s in Cressall Close, Leatherhead, at 8pm.

A bank card in the stolen handbag was used at a cash machine outside of McColls newsagent in Ruxley Lane, Ewell, at 7am on Sunday, according to police who are appealing for information.

Police are searching for the handbag containing items of high sentimental value and the key safe taken from the front of the house.

Detective Constable Audrey Cumiskey said: "This was an inexcusable crime and I am appealing to the local community to help us bring the person responsible for the offence to justice."

"Although we currently have a man in custody we still have a number of enquiries to make in relation to the burglary and I would urge anyone who has seen the handbag or items, including family photographs to contact Surrey Police.

"We need to find the key safe which was ripped from the wall outside the property prior to the burglary so please share any information which you feel may assist with our investigation."

Anyone who saw anything suspicious near the burgled home or cash machine should call the police on 101, quoting reference 45140100924. Or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
