Were aliens, a spy plane or fireworks responsible for the mystery booms heard on Saturday night?
Social media users in New York and across Britain - including south west London and Surrey - reported the strange noises at about 10pm.
Conspiracy theories abound - there have been suggestions that the bangs were caused by a spy plane, fireworks, the weather, the end of the world and aliens.
Community Facebook group, What’s on in Epsom, asked its members: "Did anyone hear some loud bangs around 10.00pm sounded like fireworks?"
Claire Robertson, from Banstead, posted on the page: "Made our windows rattle especially the last one which sounded like a sonic boom."
Tammy Hill also Tweeted: "Heard the #loudbangs in Banstead, Surrey Saturday evening! Sounded like gunshots but made the ground tremble!"
A company who put on a firework display at the Old Walcountians Rugby Club, Banstead, took the credit for causing the bangs in the local area.
Plantinum Firework Tweeted: "Yes, the #loudbangs heard on Saturday night was US! (Well in the South London area)"
Twitter user Jonas said: "Heard huge explosions south of Croydon - assumed fireworks but shook the windows and nothing to be seen."
Did you hear the bangs? Do you know the cause?
