A brain tumour survivor who embarked on a nationwide book tour to tell others about her road to recovery is ready for her coming home party.

Claire Bullimore, from Norbury, wrote the book to tell people it is possible to be more than just a survivor of a brain tumour.

Miss Bullimore said getting to meet people as she travelled around the country had the desired effect.

She said: “Everywhere I went I had a really good reception and brain tumour charities let me go to their events and some of them asked for my story so I gave a talk.

“There were a lot of people who had not got involved with others that had had brain tumours before and it encouraged them to get involved and step out of their comfort zone.”

The 31-year-old still suffers from health problems associated with the non-cancerous tumour that was the size of a grapefruit,(pictured below) including seizures and being partially blind in one eye.

This meant throughout her book tour, which took in 20 cities in five months and was funded by online donations, she had to rely on public transport.

One of her stopping off points during her travels was the launch of a brain tumour research centre of excellence in Plymouth, which is a partnership between charity Brain Tumour Research and Plymouth University.

She said: “So little is known about brain tumours and how to treat them and Brain Tumour Research is doing an amazing job to improve things for patients like me.”

Also at the launch was Linda Rickford, from Coulsdon, whose son David has a brain tumour.

The 67-year-old said: “Nobody deserves to have cancer once let alone twice, but my son was diagnosed with a low-grade ependymoma tumour having previously recovered from Hodgkins Lymphoma.

"It is possible the tumour could have resulted from earlier radiotherapy.

“So little is known about this area and that is why the work of this centre is vital.”

Miss Bullimore’s coming home party is taking place Wednesday, December 10, from 6pm to 9pm at the Skylark, South End, Croydon.
