A couple tried to steal cash from a woman with learning difficulties by pretending to be her carers.

Stacey Lewis, 37, and Robert Egan, 28, approached the vulnerable 44-year-old in Queens Gardens, Croydon town centre, before escorting her to the bank.

They coached their victim on how to withdraw money and to tell bank staff they were her carers.
But they were overheard by two witnesses who followed them and called the police.

Officers arrived at the bank in George Street go find the victim withdrawing money with Lewis, of St James's Road stood next to her and Egan, of South End, Bookham, sat nearby.

They each pleaded guilty to attempted theft and were jailed for 18 weeks at Croydon Crown Court on December 8.

Lewis sentenced to a further 12 weeks in prison for breaching a suspended sentence order, given to her in April for an assault in June last year. Egan was jailed for an extra day for resisting arrest.
