Crystal Palace have signed Jordon Mutch to their squad from Premiership strugglers QPR and former Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi.

The £4.75m move for Mutch was confirmed moments before an Alan Pardew press conference with a tweeted picture of the player holding an Eagles kit.

At the press conference the Newcastle boss revealed he had also signed 33-year-old Ameobi and given Glenn Murray a new contract.

Pardew said of the Mutch deal: "He's a player who caught my eye at Newcastle. Lots of potential. He has talent and can score goals."

He said of the signing: "It's an area we can improve. It had to be a permanent deal. We worked closely with QPR. We feel we've both got a good deal."

Confirming the Ameobi signing he said: "I'm really pleased to have him. It's until the end of the season."

He said: "We have a nice group of strikers now. We need to find the best combination."

Senegalese footballer Papa Souare is also on Pardew's radar he said.

"The player isn't in the country yet. He's travelling back and will come for a medical."

He said if Souare signed it would probably be the last of the day but he also said he was in the dark over a permanent deal with Manchester United for Wilfried Zaha.

The signings so far brings Alan Pardew's transfer activity to three players following the Yaya Sanogo loan from Arsenal.

Ameobi had been at Newcastle for 14 years playing in just shy of 400 games and scoring 79 times.

He left for Turkish club Gaziantep BB but finished in December citing family reasons.

Midfielder Mutch, 23, was signed for £6m by QPR in August last year but made only six league starts, scoring no goals.

But at Cardiff he showed the promise which made him an England under 21 international making 44 league starts and scoring seven goals.

Crystal Palace confirmed the signing with a four-and-a-half year contract.

Palace said Mutch could figure in this weekend's game at Selhurst Park against Everton.
