A Coulsdon bar could be stripped of its licence following a mass brawl which sparked "a complete loss of control" at the venue.

Police were called and door staff from neighbouring pubs forced to intervene in the chaos as men fought inside and outside Mango Bar in Brighton Road while customers helped themselves to drinks.

The "large scale disorder" at a private party on December 20 forms the basis of a police application to Croydon Council for a review of the bar's licence.

The application also cites under-age drinkers, noise complaints, a drunk customer causing criminal damage to a nearby food shop and an unlicensed wedding reception at the bar as grounds for review.

Councillors could opt to modify, suspend or revoke the bar's licence or take no action.

In the application, filed in January, Croydon police's licensing officer described the December brawl as "serious disorder".

Darren Rhodes wrote: "I requested CCTV of the incident and it shows a number of males fighting both inside and out, people helping themselves to drinks behind the bar and a complete loss of control of the venue.

"This has caused supervisors from neighbouring venues to attend. Calls were received from neighbours about the large scale disorder and several police units were despatched to the scene."

No arrests were made, but officers found the bar did not meet several of its licensing conditions and issued it with a closure notice, barring it from selling alcohol, on New Year's Eve.

On January 2 police again attended after receiving information about a private party and found a 17-year-old drinking as well as a second youth whose ID bore a picture of a child.

Later that night a customer was arrested after damaging a nearby food shop and running back into the bar.

Officers visited the bar again on January 14 after being contacted by neighbours about noise and found a wedding reception taking place, in breach of the bar's licence.

The bridge and groom told police they had paid £1,000 for hire of the bar, food and alcohol.

Azem Nurcja, Mango Bar's owner and licence holder, is said to have lied to the officers about the reception.

Mr Nurcja told the Croydon Guardian police were "kicking me for no reason" but declined to comment further.

No date has been set for a licensing committee hearing to decide the bar's fate.

In June last year, a man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after walking into Mango Bar and attacking a 39-year-old customer with two knives.

Stephen Jelley, 51, of Brighton Road, was jailed for 12 years in November for the stabbing. Bar staff helped to fend off Jelley, with one hitting him over the head with a glass collection basket.
