Having read recently that Wandsworth and Richmond councils have agreed to share council officers saving them each more than £10m a year I think it is about time that Nathan Elvery, the chief executive of Croydon Council, starting implementing a scheme like this with one of the neighbouring councils.
With the size of the Croydon borough and nearby Bromley or Sutton there would be a lot more savings than £10m.
It also would not hit frontline services and would be far more popular than selling off land, school playing fields or raising council tax.
But, of course, Croydon’s chief executive and top council managers will not want this as it may put their own jobs in jeopardy, very much unlike forwardthinking Wandsworth and Richmond councils, which have done it to cut overall council spending and not just think of themselves.
