Croydon Council is to hike its housing tenants rent by 2.2 per cent.
At a cabinet meeting last night councillors voted for the average weekly rent for a council house to rise by £2.40, from £109.26 to £111.66.
The council said it expected the rise to be one the lowest in London.
Many councils are still yet to declare what their average rent increase will be for the next financial year.
But Croydon Council says other London boroughs are proposing to increase the average council rent from 2.9 per cent to as much as 9 per cent.
And based on announcements made to date the council expects Croydon’s increase to be the lowest percentage rise in London.
Council leader Councillor Tony Newman said: “We’re delighted to be able to offer council tenants what we expect to be the lowest rent increase in the whole of London.”
