Professionally produced artwork is set to become a feature of a monthly market.

Mine creative space and art gallery, on Carshalton High Street, is set to become a feature of Carshalton Village Market as a way to have artist and craftsmen from the gallery demonstrate their work to locals.

The market will take place at the end of every month, with the next one taking place on Saturday March 28.

The owner of Mine, Andrew Candy, is a graphic designer and keen on making art more involved in the community by showcasing some of the unusual crafts such as ceramics and glass making.

The gallery has had a tough period in the past five years after becoming victims in the national scandal involving banks mis-selling interest rates.

The shop was included on Channel 4 Dispatches and ITN news reporting on the matter, and Mr Candy also joined the campaign Bully Banks.

He took part in the debate at the House of Commons back in October to try to ensure the banks took the appropriate action and to rectify their activities.

Despite this, Mr Candy has managed to keep busy with about 35 craft workers in his space and various paintings coming in and out.

He believes the gallery has “community focus” which is why it will take part in the Village Market in the car park opposite the gallery, and the reason why he chose to set it up in March 2010.

The studio is not just used for hanging paintings. It is also a studio used by various craft makers including jewellers, metal workers, designers as well as authors.

The financial struggle the business has gone through has hindered progress with the gallery, but if the bank pays what it is due, Mr Candy is excited to engage in more events in summer in conjunction with their the venue’s fifth anniversary.
