The connection between ominous warnings from the Book of Revelations and the number of vehicles expected to visit the Beddington Incinerator could leave numerologists, ecologists and Iron Maiden fans running to the hills.

There will be 666 trucks coming to the proposed Beddington Incinerator each day according to information obtained by Green Party parliamentary candidate for Sutton and Cheam Maeve Tomlinson.

Miss Tomlinson asked Sutton council for a breakdown on the number of trucks/vehicles per day would be going to the Viridor "energy recovery facility" site in a request under the Freedom of Information Act.

This would be at the planned waste plant that would be shared between the partners of the South London Waste Partnership, Sutton, Croydon, Merton and Kingston.

Responding to the FOI was Matt Clubb, head of commissioning and contract performance at Sutton Council.

He said: "The Transport Assessment submitted by the Viridor as part of the planning application provided an estimate of 666 daily two way trips (all vehicles) to and from the site."

According to the Book of Revelations that is the number of the beast, as made popular by metal band Iron Maiden who began their song of the same name: "Woe to you, oh earth and sea, for the devil sends the beast with wrath, because he knows the time is short.

"Let him who hath understanding reckon the number of the beast for it is a human number, its number is six hundred and sixty six."

Miss Tomlinson said: "I sent the request in January and they responded on the final day they could.

"If you look into the numerology of the number it comes out with some interesting things.

"You could look at it as a warning about the incinerator and if you turned it upside that's 999 which is an emergency.

"Our position is that we don't want it.

"Public Health England reported that even the smallest amount of particles in the air are damaging to health. It is one of the reasons we don't want it.

"It will be a disaster for the area."
