ENTERTAINMENT store chain Zavvi today axed one of its Glasgow shops with immediate effect.

Staff who turned up for work at the Argyle Street branch in Glasgow were told it had been axed as part of radical cost cuts.

A female worker said: "We won't be opening today. In fact, the store won't be opening again."

It was one of another 18 outlets axed today, with the loss of 353 jobs as concerns rose for the future of the three other city stores at Buchanan Street, Glasgow Fort in Easterhouse, and Silverburn in Pollok.

The Argyle Street outlet had 18 full-time staff and an unknown number of temporary workers.

Another Scottish store closed today was in Gyle, Edinburgh, with the loss of 13 jobs.

All the rest were across England and Northern Ireland.

The announcement came just six days after another 22 stores and 180 jobs were axed by the joint administrators, who were appointed on Christmas Eve after the business collapsed with mounting debts.

Attempts are being made to try to find a buyer for the remaining 74 stores across the UK, which employ more than 1600 staff.

Trading had been badly hit when Woolworths and its wholesale division Entertainment UK - it supplied DVDs and CDs to supermarkets and music stores - went bust. It meant Zavvi faced major supply problems and was unable to meet customer orders.
