Horse racing legend AP McCoy will bring the curtain down on his glittering career at Sandown Park on Saturday.

The 40-year-old, the BBC’s sports personality of the year in 2010, is expected to claim his 20th champion jockey crown at the bet365 Jump Finale at the Esher course.

McCoy bagged his first winner as a 17-year-old in 1992 and has gone on to claim more than 4,000 race victories over the jumps.

The Irishman, who has not yet confirmed how many races he will contest on the seven-race card, tops the current title race by more than 80 wins ahead of second-placed Tom Scudamore.

The feature races to bring the curtain down on the jump season at Sandown at the weekend are the bet365 Gold Cup and the Grade One McCoy Celebration Steeple Chase.

Meanwhile, Jockey Club Racecourses have appointed Phil White as Sandown Park’s new general manager.

White, who has previously been sales manager at Sandown, moves to the Esher course having filled the same role at Kempton Park nearby.

“Many people talk about Sandown being their second favourite racecourse and that is a great place to be, but also means there’s a huge opportunity ahead,” he said.
