Croydon's Primary Care Trust claims residents should have no trouble finding NHS dentists following reports of a national shortage.

A spokesman for the PCT said there were 55 dental practices in the borough, the majority of which were taking on new patients.

A study by consumer group Which? discovered only 36 per cent of dental practices across the UK were taking on new patients.

It also found numbers of dentists working for the NHS had increased in the past three months.

The changes follow a new deal introduced by the Government last April giving dentists the same money for treating fewer patients in a bid to improve standards in dentistry.

The spokesman added: "Unlike in some parts of the UK, no one in Croydon currently without an NHS dentist should have difficulty finding one."

Lists of the dental practices accepting new NHS patients are available from the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 020 8274 6333. Alternatively, email ,a href="mailtopals@croydonpct.nhs.uk">pals@croydonpct.nhs.uk
